A Summer of Challenges and Accomplishments

Dear Members,

As we move through the heart of summer, I'd like to take a moment to reflect on the past several weeks. While this update includes information about the golf course, it is equally about the people, challenges, and accomplishments that have shaped this season. 

In Memory of Russ McKinney

On July 17, our Hyde Park Country Club family lost a member of our Grounds Team, Russ McKinney, who passed away following an accident during the flooding in the Fairfax area.

Russ was a valued member of our fairway crew, affectionately known as the "Legends." He loved coming to work, took tremendous pride in caring for the golf course, and was known for his larger-than-life personality. Whether he was mowing fairways, singing on the mower, or stopping to visit with coworkers, Russ always brought energy and a smile to those around him.

During the golf course restoration, he frequently called to ask when he could return to mowing. He'd usually end the conversation by saying, "I'm right down the road—I can be there in five minutes." That was Russ.

Russ was well known throughout the Fairfax community and here at Hyde Park Country Club. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, coworkers, and especially his fellow Legends.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Russ's family and loved ones.

While we remember Russ, we also recognize that the recent flooding affected many families, neighbors and businesses throughout the community. We hope the weeks ahead bring continued recovery for everyone affected.

Golf Course Update

The restoration project has now experienced its first full summer under some of the most challenging weather conditions we could have encountered.

During June and July, the golf course received nearly 16.5 inches of rainfall, including several intense storm events that saturated soils and caused localized flooding. July also brought 19 days above 90°F, with a high temperature of 101.4°F. Excessive rainfall, prolonged heat, warm nights, and high humidity created extremely difficult growing conditions for both newly established and mature turf.

Following the flooding on July 17, the golf course closed for four days so our team could safely complete recovery work. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during that time.

Approximately 65% of our available labor hours were dedicated to course recovery. Our crews removed silt and debris, restored bunkers, repaired damaged turf, stabilized affected areas, and returned the golf course to playing condition.

A special thank you goes to Golf Preservations, a long-standing partner of Hyde Park Country Club. Their team contributed approximately 600 labor hours restoring the hillside on Hole 15 through soil remediation, grading, compaction, and sod installation. They also assisted in removing, replacing, and compacting approximately 120 tons of bunker sand following the flooding.

As we shared before reopening, a restoration of this magnitude continues to mature well beyond opening day.

Extensive areas of turf-type tall fescue were installed during May and early June, only weeks before reopening. While these areas have established well overall, immature root systems were immediately challenged by excessive rainfall, prolonged heat, and high humidity, increasing susceptibility to brown patch despite proactive fungicide applications.

Our fine fescue areas continue to establish as expected. Spring seedings naturally compete with weed pressure during establishment, but we are pleased with the stand developing beneath. These areas will receive their first mowing and selective innerseeding later this summer to continue improving density and appearance.

The Meyer zoysia continues to perform exceptionally well throughout the golf course. While seams remain visible in some recently installed areas, they continue to knit together as expected. Recent aerification and rolling will further improve surface smoothness, and as the turf matures we will continue expanding our selective herbicide program to improve overall uniformity.

The prolonged heat has also required adjustments on select areas areas of greens. Our team has modified mowing practices, adjusted fertility, utilized fans, and closely monitored canopy temperatures to minimize summer stress while maintaining healthy putting surfaces.

Every day, our Grounds Team evaluates conditions and adjusts maintenance practices based on weather, turf health, and playability. Every decision is made with both today's playing conditions and the long-term success of the restoration in mind.

As temperatures begin to moderate, we expect growing conditions to become increasingly favorable. We remain confident that the golf course will continue to strengthen and improve throughout late summer, fall, and beyond.

Member Stewardship

Thank you for the care and pride you continue to show in the golf course!

We have noticed many members replacing or filling divots and repairing ball marks, and those small efforts make a meaningful difference.

As a reminder, the proper way to repair a ball mark is to gently push the turf toward the center of the indentation rather than lifting or twisting it. This simple technique allows the turf to recover much more quickly. If you have an extra moment while waiting, repairing one or two additional ball marks is always appreciated and helps maintain exceptional putting surfaces for everyone.

Wine by the Vine

One of the highlights of the summer was the Wine by the Vine event.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special evening. It was wonderful to share Hyde Park Country Club from a different perspective while showcasing the planning, design, and year-round care that go into our gardens and landscapes.

A special thank you goes to Horticulturist Bryan Miller and Horticulture Intern Aubry Ketchie for leading an outstanding tour. Their knowledge, enthusiasm, and passion made the evening both educational and enjoyable, and they represented our Grounds Team exceptionally well.

Based on the positive response, we look forward to offering more opportunities like this in the future.
