Restoration Rendering-Tyler Rae

The first real cold weather of the year has finally arrived in the Ohio Valley, unfortunately the temperatures have been a real roller coaster ride. A recent rain event left standing water on the Zoysia fairways followed by freezing temperatures which encased areas in ice. This scenario poses a little concern for winterkill, especially in shaded areas, we will continue to monitor and update the membership.

The staff continues to move forward with preparations for the 2019 season, we have been working diligently to put our team together. As mentioned last month, we have run into some challenges, with obtaining H2-B guest worker visas. Government shutdowns, Department of Labor shortcomings and massive demand for seasonal guest workers has left us roughly a 30 percent chance of our friends from Mexico returning. Not great odds, however we are working on many different scenarios and options while Washington figures it out.
On the brightside, we have one Turfgrass Intern committed thus far, we are excited to have Jon Nash join our team for seven months beginning in April. Jon is an Apprentice Greenskeeper originally from the United Kingdom but currently works and resides in Perth, Australia. Our intern program, established 14 years ago has been integral to our success with many graduates that continue to grow in this industry.
Lastly, I would like to thank the entire HP membership and Board of Governors for the recent nomination of Turfnet/Syngenta Golf Course Superintendent of the Year. Our entire team is proud and humbled by the national recognition of our efforts during the Legacy Project. The feedback with the project has been well received by both members and guests and we are excited for the opening of the newly renovated practice area in the spring.
As always we look forward to your questions and feedback. Please send to grounds@hydeparkcc.com
